Pebble Beach Light began with a collector looking for an original painting created specifically for his office.
We started with photographs of the space, considering the scale of the wall, the room's charcoal cabinetry, warm lighting and contemporary finishes. The original idea was inspired by the atmospheric coastline of Turnberry, Scotland, but as the commission developed, we pivoted toward a place closer to home: Pebble Beach and its iconic 7th hole along the Monterey Peninsula.
It was a natural transition. Both landscapes share the rugged meeting of land and sea, dramatic coastal contours and constantly changing light.
Rather than creating a literal depiction of the golf course, I interpreted the landscape through my own palette-knife language, layering mineral blues and grays, earthy greens, warm ochres and flashes of muted coral across the cliffs and shoreline. Heavy impasto gives the surface movement and dimension, particularly through the sky, water and foreground grasses.
The finished 30 × 48-inch painting was designed to feel at home in the collector's office while still standing completely on its own as an original California coastal landscape.
A slim bronze floater frame was selected to complement the warm wood, charcoal cabinetry and lighting of the room without competing with the texture of the painting.
Many of my commissions begin this way, not with an exact image to reproduce, but with a place, memory or landscape that means something to the collector.
We consider the room where the painting will live, the desired size and atmosphere, reference photographs and the elements of the landscape that matter most. From there, I create an original interpretation in my signature palette-knife style.
