How do I choose the right size coastal painting for my space?

When choosing a coastal painting, scale matters just as much as the artwork itself. A larger piece can anchor a room and create an immediate sense of calm and atmosphere, while a smaller piece can add a beautiful accent to a reading nook, entryway, or bedroom.

As a general guide, artwork should occupy approximately two-thirds to three-quarters of the width of the furniture beneath it. In larger rooms with high ceilings or expansive walls, statement pieces such as a 36×72-inch original painting can create a luxurious focal point and make a space feel thoughtfully curated.

I always encourage collectors to consider not only the wall dimensions, but also how they want the room to feel. Larger coastal paintings often bring a sense of openness, serenity, and connection to nature.

What size painting works above a sofa?

A painting above a sofa should generally measure between two-thirds and three-quarters of the sofa's width. For example, an eight-foot sofa often pairs beautifully with artwork that is 60 to 72 inches wide.

Larger original paintings create an elevated, gallery-like feel and help prevent the artwork from appearing undersized in the room. Coastal landscapes, expansive sea-and-sky paintings, and panoramic waterfront scenes work particularly well above sofas because they create a sense of depth and visual breathing room.

How do I hang a large 36×72 canvas?

Large statement paintings are surprisingly easy to hang when installed properly. I recommend using heavy-duty picture hooks or a professional hanging system rated for the weight of the artwork.

The center of the painting should typically sit around 57 to 60 inches from the floor, which is considered comfortable eye level in most interiors. If hanging above furniture, allow approximately 6 to 10 inches of space between the bottom of the artwork and the top of the furniture.

Because many of my larger paintings are created on museum-deep gallery-wrapped canvases, they are designed to make a statement and can be displayed beautifully without framing.

Should artwork be centered on a wall or furniture?

In most cases, artwork should be centered over the furniture beneath it rather than centered on the entire wall. This creates visual balance and allows the artwork and furnishings to feel connected.

For example, a large coastal painting above a sofa should align with the sofa itself rather than the surrounding wall space. In entryways, hallways, or rooms without furniture, centering the artwork on the wall often works beautifully.

The goal is to create harmony and allow the painting to feel like an intentional part of the room's design.

Original Art

Why collect original oil paintings instead of prints?

An original oil painting carries the energy, texture, and presence of the artist's hand in a way that prints simply cannot replicate. Every brushstroke, palette knife mark, and layer of paint is unique and exists only once.

Original artwork also creates a stronger emotional connection with a space. It becomes part of the atmosphere of a home and often develops personal meaning over time.

For many collectors, original art is also about supporting living artists, surrounding themselves with meaningful work, and owning something that is entirely one of a kind.

What makes palette knife paintings collectible?

Palette knife paintings have a physical presence that is difficult to reproduce through photography or printing. The texture catches light differently throughout the day, creating movement and dimensionality that changes depending on where you stand.

Collectors are often drawn to palette knife paintings because of their expressive quality, rich surface texture, and the visible evidence of the artist's hand.

Each mark is intentional and cannot be perfectly repeated, making every original painting completely unique.

How do heavily textured paintings age over time?

Professional oil paintings created with archival materials can last for generations. The textured surfaces in my paintings are built using artist-grade oils and proper painting techniques designed for longevity.

Over time, heavily textured paintings often develop even more character as light interacts with their surfaces and collectors become increasingly aware of the dimensional qualities that make original art so special.

With normal care and display away from direct moisture and extreme conditions, textured oil paintings can remain beautiful for decades.

Shipping

How do large original paintings ship?

I offer several shipping methods depending on the size of the artwork and the collector's location. Smaller paintings typically ship flat and professionally packaged.

Large statement pieces may be shipped via white-glove delivery, custom crating, or rolled shipping when appropriate. My goal is always to choose the safest and most practical method for each individual painting.

I personally take great care in ensuring that every original arrives beautifully and securely.

Why do some large paintings ship rolled?

Very large paintings can sometimes be shipped rolled to reduce shipping costs and minimize the risks associated with oversized freight.

The canvas is carefully removed from its stretcher bars, rolled professionally, and shipped in a protective tube. Once it arrives, it can be restretched by a local framer.

Rolled shipping often makes it possible for collectors around the globe to acquire large-scale original artwork that would otherwise be prohibitively expensive to ship.

How long should an oil painting cure before shipping?

Oil paintings dry and cure at different rates depending on the thickness of the paint and the techniques used.

Because many of my paintings feature rich texture and palette knife work, I sometimes allow additional curing time before shipping to ensure the artwork arrives safely and beautifully.

I believe original art is worth waiting for, and I never rush the process if it compromises the quality of the collector experience.

California Coastal Art

Why do coastal paintings create a sense of calm?

Many people feel naturally drawn to coastal artwork because water, expansive horizons, and soft atmospheric light evoke feelings of openness, peace, and restoration.

Coastal paintings often remind us to slow down and breathe. The sea has a timeless rhythm that naturally creates a sense of spaciousness and tranquility within an interior.

This is one of the reasons so many collectors choose coastal artwork for living rooms, bedrooms, and spaces intended for rest and connection.

Why does Monterey Bay inspire so many of your paintings?

I live and paint along California's Central Coast and have spent countless hours exploring the Monterey Bay, Moss Landing, Carmel, and Big Sur. I also love to head north to Santa Cruz, Half Moon Bay, San Francisco and up to Mendocino and the giant redwoods.

These places possess an extraordinary combination of changing light, reflective water, working harbors, rugged coastline, and atmospheric beauty.

The coast here feels both powerful and peaceful, and I continually return to it because no two days ever look the same.

What makes working waterfront scenes timeless?

Working waterfronts tell stories.

Fishing boats, weathered docks, industrial textures, and reflective harbor waters speak to history, craftsmanship, and our connection to the sea.

They possess a sense of authenticity that transcends trends and remind us of places that are still alive and functioning today.

I love painting working waterfronts because they combine beauty, atmosphere, and a quiet sense of human presence.

Process

How are your paintings created?

My paintings begin with observation and experience. I spend time sketching, photographing, and exploring the California coast, often returning to places like Monterey Bay, Moss Landing, and Big Sur for inspiration.

Back in the studio, I work primarily in oils using palette knives to build texture, atmosphere, and luminous reflections.

Rather than painting every detail literally, I aim to capture the feeling of a place—the quality of the light, the rhythm of the water, and the emotional atmosphere of the scene.

Why have reflections become your signature?

I have always been fascinated by the way water mirrors the world around it.

Reflections create softness, movement, and a sense of stillness all at once. They allow light to become the true subject of a painting.

Over time, I realized that I was less interested in painting objects themselves and more interested in painting what light does when it touches water.

Reflections have become a visual language through which I explore atmosphere, calm, and connection.

Why do you use a palette knife?

I love the honesty of a palette knife.

It creates bold, expressive marks and beautiful texture that cannot be achieved with a brush alone.

Palette knife painting also allows light to interact physically with the paint surface, creating movement and dimensionality that change throughout the day.

The texture invites viewers to step closer, discover new details, and experience the painting differently every time they look at it.

Are all your paintings originals?

Yes. Every painting is an original, one-of-a-kind work created with palette knives and professional-grade oils on gallery-wrapped canvas.

Each piece is signed on the front and back, and wired, ready to hang, no framing required unless noted. Plein air panel paintings are not framed or wired, ask me for framing recommendations as it’s easier (and fun!) for you to order your own frame online.

Do you take commissions?

Occasionally, yes. I accept a limited number of custom commissions each year depending on studio availability. If you have a specific scene, color palette, or size in mind, please reach out through the Contact or Commissions page to begin the conversation. Please reach out here with any commission inquiries.

How long will it take to receive my order?

Original paintings typically ship within 1–2 business days, though fresh oil paintings may require additional drying time before packaging.

Palette knife sets and small studio items usually ship within 1-2 business days. You’ll receive a tracking number as soon as your order is on its way.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes, I ship worldwide.

Shipping rates are calculated at checkout.

Please note that import duties or taxes may apply depending on your country’s regulations, these are the responsibility of the buyer.

Do you offer returns or exchanges?

I want every collector to be delighted, please reach out right away if something isn’t right, and I’ll do everything I can to make it right.

Can I pick up my painting in person?

If you’re located near the San Francisco Bay Area, or Monterey Bay Area, local pickup can sometimes be arranged from the studio.

Simply select “Local Pickup” or contact me directly before placing your order.

Can you store my painting?

Paintings are delivered or shipped within a set timeframe after purchase.

I’m not able to hold or store work long-term, but I’m always happy to coordinate a smooth delivery.

Why might the colors look slightly different in person?

Each screen displays color differently, and the impasto texture of palette-knife painting catches light in a unique way.

Minor variations are natural and part of what makes each original painting so alive and dimensional.

What payment methods do you accept?

Squarespace securely processes all payments through Stripe, PayPal, or Apple Pay (depending on your region).

All major credit and debit cards are accepted.

Can I license or feature your artwork?
