About the Artist
California Coastal Oil Painter Inspired by The Monterey Bay, Big Sur & Reflective Waters
I am a California coastal oil painter creating original palette knife paintings inspired by the ever-changing light, reflective waters, and atmospheric beauty of California's Central Coast.
Living and working near Monterey Bay, I spend much of my time exploring places such as Moss Landing, Carmel, and Big Sur, where working harbors, rugged cliffs, expansive skies, and luminous reflections continually inspire my work.

Why I Paint the California Coast
The California coast has a way of making us pause.
The sea is constantly changing. Light shifts by the minute. Reflections appear and disappear. Fog rolls in and lifts. Boats move quietly through the harbor. Seabirds circle overhead.
No two moments are ever the same.
This sense of impermanence and atmosphere is what continually draws me back to the water.
My paintings are less about documenting a place exactly as it appears and more about capturing how it feels to stand there—to experience the softness of morning light, the rhythm of reflective water, and the quiet beauty of the coast.

The Places That Inspire My Work
The Monterey Bay
Monterey Bay possesses an extraordinary combination of calm water, changing weather, marine life, and atmospheric light. Its harbors, beaches, and reflective waters provide endless inspiration for my paintings.

Moss Landing & Working Waterfronts
I am continually inspired by the authenticity of California's working waterfronts.
Fishing boats, weathered docks, industrial textures, and reflective harbor waters tell stories of craftsmanship, history, and our enduring relationship with the sea.
These scenes possess a timeless quality that transcends trends.

Carmel & Big Sur
Big Sur's dramatic cliffs and Carmel's soft coastal light remind us of the extraordinary beauty of California's coastline.
The mineral colors, expansive horizons, and atmospheric moods found in these places continually influence my palette and compositions.

Why Reflections Have Become My Signature
Over time, I realized that I was becoming less interested in painting objects themselves and increasingly fascinated by what light does when it touches water.
Reflections create softness, movement, and stillness all at once.
They slow us down.
They invite us to look more closely.
They transform ordinary moments into something atmospheric and poetic.
Many of my paintings feature reflective water because it allows light itself to become the true subject of the work.

My Process
Every painting begins with observation and experience.
I spend time sketching, photographing, and exploring California's coastline, often returning to Monterey Bay, Moss Landing, Carmel, and Big Sur.
Back in the studio, I work primarily in oils using palette knives to build texture, atmosphere, and luminous reflections.
Rather than painting every detail literally, I aim to capture the emotional atmosphere of a place—the quality of the light, the rhythm of the water, and the feeling of being there.

Why I Use a Palette Knife
I love the honesty of palette knife painting.
A palette knife creates bold, expressive marks and rich surface texture that cannot be replicated by a brush alone.
The dimensional surface catches light differently throughout the day, giving each original painting movement and presence.
The texture invites viewers to step closer and continually discover something new.
