Carried by the Trade Winds is a large-scale Kauai, Hawaii painting created as a private commission by California artist Lisa Elley.
Inspired by the landscape, ocean, and outrigger voyaging traditions of Kauai, this 48 × 72 inch outrigger canoe painting brings together a sweeping cream sail, loosely rendered figures, moving Pacific water, and the mountainous Hawaiian coastline.
Painted entirely with palette knives, the surface is built with expressive impasto, broken color, and sculptural texture. From across the room, the composition reads as a sweeping narrative landscape; up close, the figures, sail, canoe, water, and mountains dissolve into individual knife marks and layered passages of paint.
Rather than recreating a specific historical event, the work was conceived as a contemporary Hawaiian landscape painting rooted in movement, journey, connection, and the natural environment of Kauai.
