There’s something about the California coast on a quiet afternoon. The light turns silvery, the ocean settles into soft shades of blue, and the shoreline seems to stretch on forever.
That was the feeling I wanted to capture in Silver & Shore, an original 36 × 36-inch oil painting inspired by those lovely, unhurried moments beside the sea.
Painting the Beauty of Coastal Light
I’ve always been drawn to the changing light along California’s Central Coast. Some days the ocean is brilliant turquoise; on others, it takes on a softer, more atmospheric quality, with layers of mineral blue, slate, and silver reflecting across the water.
For Silver & Shore, I worked with a palette of muted coastal blues, warm sandy neutrals, and touches of earthy olive.
The foreground is full of expressive palette knife texture, while the distant ocean and sky remain softer and more open.
Gentle waves roll toward the beach, seabirds drift overhead, and two small figures wander along the water’s edge.
I love including these little human moments in my coastal paintings. They give a sense of scale and invite you into the landscape without taking attention away from the scenery itself.
The Beauty Is in the Texture
One of my favorite things about working with palette knives is the way the paint creates its own landscape.
Thick layers catch the light, edges overlap, and each stroke adds movement and dimension.
In Silver & Shore, the textured shoreline contrasts with the quieter passages of ocean and sky, creating a painting that feels both expressive and peaceful.
At 36 × 36 inches, the square composition has a lovely presence. There’s enough scale to appreciate the dimensional texture while maintaining a sense of openness and calm.
It’s the kind of painting that brings a little of the California coastline indoors.
