Azure & Slate | A New Coastal Landscape Painting

There's something about the California coast that keeps bringing me back to the easel. The changing blues, the rugged cliffs, and the way the ocean shifts color depending on the light. No two days ever look quite the same.

My newest original painting, Azure & Slate, is a large 60 x 48-inch palette-knife landscape inspired by the beautiful Carmel Highlands coastline, where the rugged cliffs meet the Pacific and the landscape seems to melt into layers of mist and atmosphere.

For this piece, I wanted to explore a cooler, more atmospheric palette. Layers of azure, slate blue, soft grays, and mineral tones create a sense of depth and movement, while the heavier impasto texture gives the landscape its character.

I particularly love the relationship between the quieter passages and the more expressive knife work. There's plenty of texture to explore up close, but from across the room, the painting comes together as a sweeping coastal scene.

At five feet tall, Azure & Slate has a wonderful presence. I love working at this scale because it gives the landscape room to breathe and allows the viewer to feel a little more immersed in the scene.

My work continues to evolve, but the California coastline remains one of my greatest inspirations. I'm always looking for new ways to capture its atmosphere, changing colors, and natural beauty without getting caught up in every little detail.

Azure & Slate is an original 60 x 48 x 1.5-inch impasto painting, created entirely with palette knives.

You can explore the painting, see close-up details of the texture, and view its availability on my website.
