Painted on location during a quiet morning along the Monterey Bay coastline, this plein air study captures the wild calla lilies that grow along the bluffs above the beach. Their soft white and yellow blooms lean toward the ocean breeze while the waves roll in below, layered in cool blues and seafoam whites.
Working directly from life allows the colors, movement, and atmosphere of the coast to come through in a way that studio work never quite replicates. The thick palette knife strokes echo the texture of the surf and the rugged coastal landscape.
